When it comes to marketing your business there are no hard and fast rules. What works for one person or business may not work for another. If you have a marketing idea the best thing to do, if it's in your budget, is to give your idea a try.
Some people will swear against cold calling, canvassing, mailers, e-mail marketing, networking groups and promotional giveaways but then there are others that have built their business using these techniques. Since the notary business has been slow in my neck of the woods I decided to give cold calling a try.
Cold calling is definitely not on the top of my list of favorite things to do but I figured it could not hurt. To my surprise the response I received was 99% positive. Because I am offering a service and not trying to sell anything, the person on the other end of the phone was happy to learn that I was available to perform mobile notary services.
So next time you have a marketing idea give it a try!

Good Afternoon:
I am a new Notary Public and Signing Agent in Sacramento, CA. I appreciate your post. I am learning alot from the information you share. I am going to try some called calling to the businesses in my area. What would you suggest in starting with my pricing? It looks like most notaries are charging for a basic signing $10 + travels as a standard. My wife and I have a consulting website where I would like to market my notary services, what would you suggest (www.mommytheadministrator.com)? Also, it looks like some notaries charging for a Jurat + the oath or affirmation as separate or could this be a totally separate form?
Thank you!
John Savage
My friend is going over sees soon and wants me to notarize his transcripts and then he is going to take his Apostille to the SOS. it is Ok for me to notarize just the official copy of his transcripts right?
Thank you,
John Savage
John, thank you for stopping by my blog. I would suggest a minimum of $25 for travel and then the $10 per notarized signature.
It would be best for you to have a separate website to market your notary services. A separate website will give you a better chance to market yourself.
Check the SOS manual for the exact fees you can charge for notarization.
As regards the notarization for your friend, you will be notarizing his statement about his transcript. You would use a jurat with an affiant statement, which can be found on my website www.thedocdiva.com
I have one more question for today. I am open to notarize any document that I am already certified to do at this point, but for the sake of getting started, experience, and perfecting my skills, what would you suggest to be the main areas to focus on as a start?
Thank you,
John
As a notary, you are already certified to notarize any legal document.
The best way to get started is to start notarizing. You are never going to be familiar with every document (even though some clients expect that you will be) so experience really is the best teacher.
So start telling people you are a willing and able notary.
